Literacy Week – Day 5

"What we learn with pleasure, we never forget."- Alfred Mercier

As our fun-filled week of literary celebrations drew to a close, the students and teachers paid tribute to their favourite characters by dressing up to emulate them and sharing why they love them. The corridors of the school were vibrant with children in myriad costumes- from Rumpelstiltskin to the thirsty crow, from Ram and Sita to Harry Potter, from Mary Poppins to Malala. Students of the Junior Program showed off their favourites as they paraded around the school to the tune of happy music, brightening the faces of everyone they met. The students of the Middle Program shared what made their chosen character special by talking about their traits, quoting memorable lines, and reading excerpts from books. Creativity and innovation were on full display in the costumes improvised by the students and their families.

    Literacy Week – Day 4

    On Day 4 of Literacy Week, the focus was on words and all the wonderful ways they affect how we read and write. Learners had fun with various word games such as I spy, rhyming words, tongue twisters, musical adjectives, and two-minute anagrams. Creative activities like graffiti walls and comic strips with onomatopoeia and puns gave a concrete shape to their exploration of Wondrous Words.

      Literacy Week – Day 3
      The day brought with it a wave of histrionic flair as the students indulged in various activities and experiences that brought their favourite tales to life. Following the theme of the day- Stories in Action- the day was chock full of theatrical pursuits. The students of pre-primary witnessed puppet shows orchestrated by their teachers who not only wrote the scripts and designed the sets, but also showcased the art of acting through voice modulation and intonation. Students of grade 1 and above got to put their own theatrical skills on display as they enacted scripts and performed in readers' theatres. Learners walked away from the day with a new appreciation of the nuances of characterisation and visualisation.

        Literacy Week – Day 2

        On day 2 of Literacy Week, we celebrated authors and their craft. Students and teachers wore clothing and accessories inspired by their favourite authors. Be it Eric Carle, Dr Seuss, Patricia Polacco or James Dean, students took a close look at the themes, writing styles, and illustration styles that make the works of these authors unique. Students of the Middle Program brought an element of critical thinking into their activity as they wrote letters to the author, analysed the impact of perspective on the reader, and worked in crews to scrutinise the various elements of the author's craft. Not only did these activities lead to deep insights into the craft of writing, but also laid out opportunities for students to diversify their reading repertoire.

          Literacy Week – Day 1

          “Poetry is eternal graffiti written in the heart of everyone.” —Lawrence Ferlinghetti

          Poetry was the theme of the inaugural day of the week-long Literacy Week. The atmosphere was charged with creativity and inspiration as students across the grades took part in activities that allowed them to explore various facets of poetry and poetic devices. Whether they were sharing favourite poems with friends, putting a twist on much-loved rhymes, drawing inspiration from colours, or integrating their knowledge of nouns and adjectives into diamante poetry, the students of JP expressed themselves with enthusiasm and exuberance. Students of grade 3 and above expanded their knowledge of genres and technicalities of poetry writing as they delved deeper into symbols, similes and idioms and expressed their ingenuity through acrostic poems and blackout poetry.
